ASIAN ART AUCTIONS

Driven by China's economic growth, the Asian art market is currently one of the most dynamic in the world. Works and objects from the Far East - China, Japan, Southeast Asia and Vietnam - are extremely popular with collectors, regularly fetching record prices at public auctions in Paris.

Millon's Asian Art department - co-directed by Tahsi Chang (in charge of buyer relations and descriptive sheets) and Anna Kerviel (who monitors online estimates and inventories) - regularly organises auctions in Paris, in the Drouot district.

It benefits from the expertise of Jean Gauchet, a member of the Oriental Ceramic Society in London and an expert in Asian art for the Chambre européenne des experts-conseil en oeuvre d'art in Paris (CECOA).

Our Asian Art auction calendar

As a leading player in the Asian Art market, Millon organises 8 auctions each year: 4 catalogued sales of Asian Art objects and 4 online auctions on the following themes:

  • Art of China (Xia, Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, Tang, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties),
  • Art of Japan (Kamakura, Muromachi, Azuchi-Momoyama, Edo, Meiji, etc.),
  • Art of Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Indonesian archipelago, Philippines, etc.),
  • Modern and Contemporary Asian Art.

Buyers from all over the world are increasingly taking part in the success of our Asian art sales sessions.

Asian art accessible at all prices

Our department receives works of art from different cultures for appraisal and auction: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Khmer, Thai, Vietnamese, Mongolian, Burmese, Nepalese, etc

Among the objects we regularly offer for sale are art, ritual and religious objects (statues of Vishnu, Shiva, Buddha, etc.), symbols of power and traditional and modern everyday items:

  • Sculptures (bronze, wood, jade, terracotta, etc.), okimonos,
  • Paintings on silk, paper rolls (makemonos), Japanese prints,
  • Porcelain ("blue and white" from the Ming, Yuan and Qing dynasties, known as "Hué blue", Kakiémon, etc.), raku ceramics, pieces from the Compagnie des Indes,
  • Lacquer screen panels,
  • Tripod planters, incense burners, snuffboxes, Meiji netsukes, scholarly objects, bamboo brush holders, palanquins, textile arts, weapons (swords, katana, tantos, armour, wakisashis, tsubas, etc.), ritual bells, shamanic ceremonial masks, etc

Some fine results and records achieved at Asian art auctions

Popular with collectors and art lovers from the four corners of the globe, Millon's Asian art auctions achieve sensational results:

  • A rare falangcai porcelain bowl from the famille rose - decorated with plum blossoms and calligraphy - sold for €3.25 million.
  • Sur le chemin du temple cambodgien (1943 ), an 8-leaf woodenscreen by Le Cuoc Loc with polychrome lacquered decoration, sold for €1,175,000 (world record)
  • A large famille rose 'Yangcai' porcelain vase (China, 18th century) sold for €255,000.
