*Rare pair of statuettes

of seated twin sisters. They wear headdresses, one of which is adorned with a headband and a side ornament of small shells, tambas, necklaces and armbands. These rich ornaments indicate their important position in the clan. Their bodies are covered with ceremonial paintings. In one case, a small dog modeled in relief on the torso is about to embrace her tenderly. Polychrome terracotta, some traces of manganese oxides, good overall condition. Chupicuaro, Guanajuato or Michoacan region, Western Mexico, 400-100 B.C. 15 x 12 x 5 - 15 x 11 4.8 cm Provenance: Former Samuel Dubiner collection since the 1950s.
