*Modelled and engraved vase

It shows a seated lord, wearing a spectacular crown of exotic bird feathers and semi-precious stone amulets. These rich ornaments testify to his important status within the clan. He wears a back jewel, a pelota player's belt around his waist and, facing him, a scepter with raptor deities. His fingers are placed on his lips to indicate the sacredness of his word. Thin-walled terra cotta, broken and glued in several places, traces of red pigments or cinnabar, marks of time. Veracruz, Mexico, Classical period, 450-750 A.D. 10.2 x 16.5 cm Provenance: former Yvon Collet collection, 1968.
