Bust (Maya)

  • Description

Bust (Maya)

featuring a deity personifying the glyph of the number zero. He wears a turban around his head and large tambas over his ears. His skeletal face symbolizes the passage from life to death. His chin evokes the distinctive sign of the hand resting on his left cheek, with the head of a bird of prey resting on his right cheek. Representations of this glyph symbolizing the number zero are extremely rare, as is the deity depicted here associated with it. Orange-beige terracotta, slightly broken and glued on the lower part, some age-related damage. Maya, Classical period, Mexico or Guatemala, 600-900 A.D. 36 x 25 x 17 cm A thermoluminescence test from the Archeolabstl laboratory confirming the authenticity of this work will be given to the buyer.
