Shamanic spoon
- Description
Shamanic spoon
probably intended for inhaling hallucinogenic potions or powders. Its stylized forms are functional and refined to the extreme. Carved, polished and drilled green nephrite Olmec, Mexico or Costa Rica, 900-400 BC 20 x 8.7 x 5.6 cm This type of object is characteristic of the Olmec culture. These spoons were used for rituals such as bloodletting or the absorption of hallucinogenic substances. The simple, uncluttered shape is thought to echo that of a bird in flight, the spirit accompanying the shaman on his journey. The holes on the sides are suspension holes for carrying the spoon. Some spoons, like other Olmec objects, were often reused by subsequent cultures, such as the Maya and Aztecs. Note that there are only two known sources of jade for the Olmecs: one in Guatemala and the other in Costa Rica, from which this spoon was made.Sale ended
