Sale information

A widespread term from 1830 onwards, Orientalism refers to a climate that emerged in the 17th century and developed in French painting in the 18th and 19th centuries. It began with the fashion for turqueries, exemplified by the famous "mammamouchi" in Molière's Bourgeois Gentilhomme, and underwent a major evolution in the 19th century, when the attraction for oriental themes reached its peak. In 1829, in the preface to Les Orientales, Victor Hugo noted that "the Orient has become a general preoccupation". Until the turn of the century, Orientalist painting, deeply linked to travel, was mainly the work of travelling painters who spent several years in the Orient. Orientalist painting is deeply linked to travel. The vast majority of Orientalist painters drew their inspiration from their travels. From 1900 onwards, a more realistic style emerged, with European artists such as Etienne Dinet and Edouard Verschaffelt settling permanently in the Orient. At the same time, native artists developed their own pictorial art through contact with the Beaux Arts schools that were opening up and exchanges with Europe. These included Osman Hamdi Bey in Turkey, Azouaou Mammeri in Algeria and Hassan El Glaoui in Morocco. They were the precursors of the modern and contemporary Arab school. These immense landscapes bathed in light, these cities with their dense shady lanes, are a new source of inspiration for artists and writers. Reality and imagination mingled around new themes until the emergence of abstraction in the 1950s.
