What are Ecole de Paris works?

The term Ecole de Paris was coined in 1925 by the art critic André Warnod.

It refers to the foreign artists who came to live in Paris between 1890 and 1940, and in some cases as late as 1960. At the time, the capital was a particularly rich creative centre where painters, sculptors, poets and other artists came together.

The works of the Ecole de Paris were avant-garde. At the beginning of the century, it mainly concerned artists based in Montparnasse, such as Alexandre Archipenko, Ossip Zadkine and Pinchus Kremegne, to name but a few.

During the 1st World War, these artists were supported by Germaine Bongard and Léopold Zborowski.

Between the wars, the Ecole de Paris was marked in part by abstraction, with the arrival of painters such as André Lanskoy and Serge Poliakoff. Their works, estimated by our experts, can be found in our auctions.

After 1933, it was the turn of artists such as Sam Ringer and Moses Bagel. These artists moved from Montmartre to Montparnasse. Non-figurative modern artists came together under the name Nouvelle Ecole de Paris.

The Ecole de Paris department brought together these artists, with their varied techniques and styles, in prestigious auctions.
