Rare ceremonial paddle, the upper part in...

Rare ceremonial paddle, the upper part in the shape of a leaf with a raised median edge, presenting a magnificent engraved decoration consisting of an expressive mask with tentacles on the head and distended ears (here it is probably a marine deity). Other motifs evoke ancestral symbols, magical interlacing and sea or land paths (a sort of primitive map, perhaps intended to access a sacred space).
Hardwood, old brown patina and marks of use, lime remains
Solomon Islands, late 19th-early 20th century
128 x 15 cm
