  • Description

THOMPSON (James).

Les saisons, poem translated from English. London, sn, 1779. In-16, red morocco, richly decorated smooth spine, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with spandrels and gilt arms in the center, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt inner border, gilt edges (period binding). Illustrated with a frontispiece by Marillier engraved by De Launay (Cazin, sa vie et ses éditions pp. 73). A very rare work from the Cazin collection, in morocco with the coat of arms of Jean Louis de Viefville des Essarts, baron de Viefville (1744 - 1820). He held important positions in the election of Guise, was a lawyer at the Parlement de Paris and elected deputy of the Third Estate to the Estates General of 1789. His ideas were both anti-slavery and loyal to the king and the constitution. Under the Empire, he was a member of the Conseil Général de l'Aisne and mayor of Guise. A precious copy in contemporary morocco.
