FISCHER Léonard (Abbé)

Pèlerinage de La Mecque, Strasbourg, Imprimerie de Ch.Hauss, rue de l'Ail, 17, 1908.

81 pages, 1 engraving out of text, library stamps. Abbé Léonard Fischer has drawn from his seven-year stay in Constantinople (canon of Smyrna) and his travels in the East a detailed account of the pilgrimage to Mecca, giving an accurate picture of the 1906-1907 pilgrimage. It reveals pilgrim statistics by nationality, a list of prestigious pilgrims from India and China (1 ulama and a wealthy notable) - note that the mention of Chinese pilgrims is rare - a description of the different mahmal, pilgrimage rites, life in Mecca including the trades involved, the role of women, the cost of the pilgrimage and sanitary conditions.
The author describes the history of epidemics, mainly cholera, in Mecca, and lists the various health commissions that met from the mid-19th century onwards, and the measures recommended and taken to contain them (sanitation, hospitals, etc.). A chapter is also devoted to the project to extend the Hedjaz railroad to Mecca. This study identifies the many challenges involved in organizing the pilgrimage and adapting it to twentieth-century advances in technology (railroads) and science (sanitary measures).
