RARE AEPYORNIS EGG

Unhatched, complete, intact and unrestored. Height: 28 cm, width 22 cm. Without base. Aepyornis maximus. Note The æpyornis, also known as the vorompatra, was an impressively large bird endemic to Madagascar. This giant flightless bird could grow up to three meters tall and weigh half a ton. A sort of giant ostrich, it disappeared during the 17th century. No naturalized specimens exist. Provenance Private collection from Madagascar. Kept by the family to this day.
