*A cult mask featuring a face with a blooming expression accentuated by an open mouth and eyes, the cheekbones marked in relief. It is bordered on each side by a rectangular protrusion with two conical holes, evoking the use of a primitive drill bit. This mask stands out for the quality of its carving, the nobility of the stone and the expressiveness of the face. Green speckled cipolin and marble, carved, drilled and polished Chontal, Guerrero region, Mexico, 400-100 B.C. 14.9 x 13 x 4.7 cm Provenance: former Yvon Collet collection since 1968 Bibliography: Mascaras Mexicana, sociedad de arte moderno, editions sociedad de Arte Moderno A.C, Mexico, 1945, p.26, f.6, for a mask very close to the former collection of painter Diego Rivera.
