Seated Ithyphallic shaman

  • Description

Seated Ithyphallic shaman

His hands are placed on his thighs as a sign of authority, and his face displays a beautiful, hieratic expression. The biconical hole at the top of the head allows us to classify this work as one of the pendants probably worn by a great dignitary during ceremonies. Carved, polished and pierced green veined and speckled hard stone Colima, western Mexico, AD 100-250 7.8 x 5.3 cm Provenance: ex Alexandre Bernand collection Exhibitions/Publication: Le cinquième soleil, arts du Mexique, Musée Jacques Chirac, Sarran, 2012, reproduced p. 84 under no. 58 (on the left in the photo)
