SAND (George).

Set of 4 L.A.S. addressed to the composer Alexandre BAZILLE (1835-†?); he composed the opera Callirhoé to a libretto by Armand Silvestre based on the novel by Maurice Sand. He came to Nohant in autumn 1867. - L.A.S. ""G. Let's try to get Silvestre [Armand Silvestre], but he perches in 36 places [...]"". Cf. Correspondance de G. Sand (by G. Lubin, Classiques-Garnier, 1964-1995), tome XXI p. 664, n°14609. - L.A.S. ""G. Sand", Nohant, March 6 [1871], 2 pp. in-8 on cold monogrammed paper: "My dear Bazille, I received your letter yesterday [...] I don't know if my reply will find you in Nantes. [...] I have no news from Silvestre [...] What misfortunes, my poor friend! The wheat is frozen here, and the sky is as cruel as the Prussians. [...]"" Cf. Correspondance de G. Sand (by G. Lubin, Classiques-Garnier, 1964-1995), tome XXII p. 329, n°15375 (dated March 3, 1871). - L.A.S. ""G. Sand", slnd ""mardi matin"" (June 2, 1868?), 1 p. in-8 on monogrammed paper: ""It has been absolutely impossible for me to attend to Callirhoé, and I have been told that Mr. P. de K. [Paul de Kock?] was very rough and not polite. I'll be back next month and we'll see. I'm sending you back the libretto until further notice. [...]"" Cf. Correspondance de G. Sand (by G. Lubin, Classiques-Garnier, 1964-1995), tome XXI p. 7, n°13671? - L.A.S. ""G. There are days like that, though, when Maurice takes us all for a walk and we come home hungry and sleepy in the evening. The weather is so nice! I heard from Lina [Maurice's wife]. I know you often see Mme VIARDOT, but she wrote me three words on New Year's Day without mentioning you, and I don't know where you stand with your musical discussions. I'm sticking to what she told me, that you still have some work to do [...] For my part, I know that you learn well all your life and that it's never over! [...]"" Cf. Correspondance de G. Sand (by G. Lubin, Classiques-Garnier, 1964-1995), tome XXIII pp. 449-450, n°16557.
