  • Description

LONGUS.

Les amours pastorales de Daphnis et Chloé. Paris, sn, 1745. Small in-4, red morocco, smooth ornate spine, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt inner lace, gilt edges (period binding). Illustrated with a title-frontispiece engraved by Benoît Audran after Antoine Coypel, 29 hors-texte figures (including 28 by Audran after Philippus, and the anonymous plate "aux petits pieds"), 4 headpieces and 4 culs-de-lampe by Cochin. Reprint of the "Du Régent" edition, with the addition of a 29th engraving (known as "les petits pieds") found in only a few copies of the first printing of 1718. There are 2 formats for this edition: the current in 8 and the reprint in 4. According to Brunet (III 1157) and Cohen (652), "as the engraved frontispiece of this reprint still bears the date 1718, some people have tried to pass it off as the original edition by deleting the printed title dated 1745". This copy is one of the few to be reprinted in in 4 format (very wide margins), complete with frontispiece dated 1718, title page dated 1745, and supplemented with Lancelot's notes. A precious copy in contemporary morocco.
