  • Description

[STENDHAL (Henri Beyle dit)].

L'Abbesse de Castro [in] La Revue des Deux Mondes. Paris, Bureau de la Revue des Deux Mondes, 1839. In-8, 852 pp, green half-chagrin, ribbed spine decorated with black gilt and cold-stamped fillets, gilt title and tomaison (period binding). Volume XVII of the fourth series of the Revue des Deux Mondes includes the PRE-ORIGINAL EDITION of L'Abbesse de Castro, published under the pseudonym of F. de Lagenevais in the issues of February 1 (pp. 273-328) and March 1, 1839 (pp. 628-653). Inspired by a scandal at the end of the 16th century, Stendhal's famous short story - later to become the first in Chroniques italiennes - was published at the end of 1839 by Dumont (Paris), as part of a collection that included Vittoria Accoramboni, duchesse de Bracciano, and Les Cenci. It shares with La Chartreuse de Parme, published the same year, the setting of a fantastical Italy conducive to the unfolding of passion. Slightly rubbed, a few small scattered brown spots.
