  • Description

BAUDELAIRE (Charles).

Les Paradis artificiels, Opium et Haschisch by Charles Baudelaire. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et De Broise, libraires éditeurs, 1860. In-12 (188 x 121 mm) of [2] ff. (faux-titre, title in red and black), IV pp. (dedication), 304 pp. 1 f. uncensored (table). Printed in Alençon by Poulet-Malassis and de Broise. Brown morocco, spine ribbed with gilt skull and crossbones, gilt title, date on tail, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, inner lace (later binding, c. 1890, by Cyprien Lhuinte, bookbinder in Grenoble). Minor rubbing to spines and corners. First edition. (Talvart I, 290; Carteret I, 126; Vicaire I, 345). An interesting copy in a handsome, signed later binding, bearing a curious bookplate on the flyleaf: the apocryphal bookplate of Ch. Baudelaire drawn and engraved by Félix Vallotton in his suite of 35 etchings published in 1895 by Joly, Paris ""Ex-libris imaginaires et supposés de personnages célèbres anciens et modernes"". With a flyleaf from the binding's period (with the same watermark as the last endpaper, incidentally) bearing the misleading mention in pencil: ""Exemplaire de Baudelaire / son ex-libris"".
