(faux-titre, in v° avis des éditeurs relatif au droit de traduction de l'ouvrage et noms des imprimeurs); (1) f. (red and black title with the publishers' mark printed in red, and an epigraph (6 verses) borrowed from Book II of Agrippa d'Aubigné's Tragiques); 248 pp. (including dedication to Théophile Gautier ""Au poète impeccable au parfait magicien ès langue française..."") and (2) uncounted table pages. Black half-maroquin with corners, five-ribbed spine, author's name and title gilt, date on tail, gilt head, covers preserved (later binding). Rare first edition with first printing errors (""Feurs"" for ""Fleurs"" in the running title on pages 31 and 108 and page 45 miscalculated 44), without the 6 pieces condemned on August 20, 1857 by the Tribunal de la Seine: Les Bijoux (XX p. 52-53) replaced by a box between pages [50] and 55 (one sheet 51-[52] end of poem XIX ""La Géante"" and beginning of XXI ""Parfum exotique""), Le Léthé (XXX p. 73-74), A celle qui est trop gaie (XXXIX, p. 91-93) replaced by a box between pp. 90 and 95 (a blank n.p. sheet on the recto with the beginning of XL ""Reversibilité""), Lesbos (LXXX, p.187-190) and Femmes damnées (LXXXI, pp. 191-195) replaced by a box between pp. 186 and 197 (one blank n.p. on front with the beginning of LXXXII ""Femmes damnées [2e partie]"") and Les Métamorphoses du Vampire (LXXXVII pp. 206-207) replaced by a box between pp. [204] and 209 (one sheet with the end of LXXXVI ""La Béatrice"" on the recto and the beginning of LXVIII ""Un voyage à Cythère"" on the verso). On the other hand, the six pieces in question are always clearly indicated in the original table in fine. A fine, rare copy with large margins, one of only 230 copies mutilated and hardbacked by the publisher Poulet-Malassis after the first auction on June 25, followed by the Paris public prosecutor's condemnation on July 17.Estimate
