  • Description

Guardian of sacred relics (Fang)

featuring a nude, standing hermaphrodite figure with muscular features evoking strength and power. The shoulders are raised, the torso inflated and the hands clasped over the abdomen in a symbolic gesture. His handsome face, with its pleated eyes, displays an interiorized, protective expression. The head is open with an angular double-lobed helmet. Wood with old brown patina, oozing in places and shiny honey. Fang, Betsi group, Gabon, 19th century. H. 54 cm. Provenance: Acquired in January 2006 from Galerie Flak, Paris. Ex Musée de Saint Cyprien collection
