depicting a seated crowned divinity, her arms symbolically crossed over her torso. The face is beautifully interiorized, with coffee-bean eyes and a symbolically sewn mouth. It is topped by a circular crown. Numerous figures of this type have been discovered, generally smaller in size than our example. They often represent the rain god Tlaloc or the water goddess Chalchiutlicue. Light-green metamorphic dolomitic limestone, carved and polished. Mixtec, southern Mexico, Postclassic, 900 - 1521 A.D. 16.5 x 5.5 x 3.7 cm Provenance: former Yvon Collet collection, 1969
