*Shaman standing musician

  • Description

*Shaman standing musician

playing a conch-shaped musical instrument. He wears a helmet on his head, and his face sports a soft, timeless expression accentuated by coffee-bean eyes and a closed mouth. The helmet's visor gracefully joins the sagittal crest and delineates his forehead with incised radiating patterns. He wears a wide collar, a triangular ornament on his back and a refined loincloth with relief-modelled decoration. The helmet is embellished with two solar motifs. A pouring spout on the back of the head indicates that it was used as a vase for ritual sprinkling during the clan's magical-religious ceremonies. Terra cotta, coffee red and brown, marks of time. Good overall condition Colima, Comala, Protoclassic period, 100 B.C.-250 A.D. 41.7 x 21.5 cm Provenance: acquired by the current owner from Galerie Mermoz in 1989
