FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1800, after Jean - Marc NATTIER
Marie Leszczynska, Queen of France
150 x 120 cm

Reprise of the painting by Nattier kept in Versailles (see X. Salmon, Catalogue of the exhibition Jean - Marc Nattier, Versailles, 1999 - 2000, n°52, reproduced).

Queen of France, Marie Lesszyncka aspired to appear accessible, and commissioned Nattier to paint her portrait in 1748, asking to be painted in street clothes. This demand surprised and won over the critics. Dressed in a velvet gown trimmed with fur, wearing a lace cap, there is no indication of her identity, except for her very rich finery. In this respect, this portrait differs from his other effigies of Louis XV's wife. This painting, the original of which by Nattier is kept at the Musée de Versailles, is also the last one for which the queen agreed to pose. Popularized from 1755, the portrait was then multiplied by the painters of the king's cabinet.
