Our woman's head is a reversal of the muse's head on the right of the drawing
Le Triomphe de Bonaparte ou la Paix, kept in the collections of the Château de Chantilly.
This drawing was originally made by Prud'hon for Bruun - Neergaard as an illustration for a text that the latter had written (see J Guiffrey, op. cit. supra, n° 1058).
A first thought, also from Bruun - Neergaard, is kept in the Louvre. This very accomplished drawing was undoubtedly intended for engraving by Roger, a project that was not carried out (see J. Guiffrey, op. cit. supra, n° 1059).

Our young woman's head was part of a group of painted sketches, full-length or bust figures, most of them in reverse order to the drawings, belonging to the Migneron and then Ritter collections. Two of them were sold at Phillips, London, on 14 December 1999, nos. 127 and 137 (as Prud'hon).
