June est née vers 1954. Elle est la fille d’Ada Bird Petyarre, artiste importante d’Utopia. Ayant perdu son père très jeune elle s’est tournée vers son oncle Lindsay Bird Mpetyane, grand initié et l’un des rares peintres masculins d’Utopia à s’être fait un nom.
